Thomas Raat first created a series of paintings entitled Image Icons, in which
he reinterpreted various online pictograms that typically appear on websites when
an image fails to load, is missing or as an image placeholder.
These mostly black/ grey and white icons are often simple shapes, rectangles or squares,
featuring a mountain or landscape motif – a triangle symbolizing a mountain with a sun or moon.
In Raat’s paintings, a circular cutout in the canvas represents the sun. For this artist’s book, a
similar approach was taken: instead of revealing the wall behind, the holes show the color of the
image the following page. The front and back of each page show similar images, but the back
shows a negative color translation of the front, creating a poetic contrast that evokes
a sense of day and night.

The print is signed and numbered on the back and is integrated in the book.
